Frequently Asked Questions

What type of tools/methods do I use?

I have been a trainer since the late 80’s when aversion methods were primarily used.

Having a great deal of experience with every tool and style that has come about since. To this day I believe a positive method works best for learning. Each situation still requires an evaluation of the dogs personality, disposition and inherent traits.

The relationship and lifestyle of the family along with the sensitivity levels of the dog are critical in choosing the right approach. Your trainer must understand what makes your pup tick before they ever grab the leash and make him do something!

Have I ever seen this type of problem behaviour before?

It is always necessary to rule out any medical conditions before we assume it is a behavioural issue!

This is my area of greatest experience. Having seen so many unique to bizarre behaviours I wouldn’t dare say I’ve seen it all.

What I have seen might impress y’all but there is always an underlying cause that is the true root of the problem and that is what we have to search for.

Do you have experience with my dog's breed?

With over 30 years of training there are a few breeds I have rarely or never worked with.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing organizations. During this time I have worked with almost every breed under the sun. The organizations I’ve worked with include:

  • Lincoln County Humane Society (1994-present)
  • Basset Hound Rescue of Ontario (2000-present)
  • Golden Retriever Rescue of Canada (2005-present)
  • Toronto Zoo (2005)

Is your in-person training more effective than virtual/online training?

Whether you are taking a virtual or in home training program success is dependent on taking the right approach for your dog.

In both programs I will initially gather a detailed history to understand the concerns and put together the best plan. You will receive clear, concise direction on how to begin and implement your training.

It has always been my goal to make the biggest impact on the dogs behaviour with the smallest changes. My approach to training sessions is to incorporate them into your lifestyle so it has a natural progression and success!

How many sessions will my dog need to be fully trained?

The first thing to accept is that dog training is a lifetime commitment.

You may complete the various levels of training in 6-8 sessions but your dog is always watching and learning.

Intelligence is best understood as the ability to problem solve! Which is why you want to understand your dog more than just teach him how to sit on command. In our programs every client admits they learned more about training than they expected.

Once you understand how to successfully motivate and teach you can have a lifetime of positive interaction and joy!

What makes you different than other dog trainers in Niagara?

My experience and style of training is very balanced.

I have taught dogs how to bite and I have taught many not to. I have worked with feral dogs and I have worked with some of the most brilliant dogs. In the end it doesn’t come down to how well I can train a dog but rather how well I can pass on that ability to you.

Mindy T

At the risk of being ‘cliche’, once you try Cat you’ll never go back!

I have been working with Cat for our rescue dogs for over 15 years. Whenever someone has a behaviour struggle with their dog I can’t say the words Cat Cino fast enough.

– Mindy T.Dog Breed: Various

Laura

Cat picked up on behaviours my dog was starting to show that I had no idea she was doing (like resource guarding).

We addressed this in our first training session before it became a big issue, and after that I never saw my dog show those behaviours.

Adam

Can’t recommend Cat enough. Well worth the investment to know how to manage dogs with a strong will.

She provided the tools and knowledge to effectively redirect behaviour when needed.
